 The Nobel Peace Prize for 1989
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people.

The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people.

The Dalai Lama has developed his philosophy of peace from a great reverence for all things living and upon the concept of universal responsibility embracing all mankind as well as nature. In the opinion of the Committee the Dalai Lama has come forward with constructive and forward-looking proposals for the solution of international conflicts, human rights issues, and global environmental problems.

Washington: Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama congratulated US president, Barack Obama, on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2009.   The exiled Tibetan leader, who is currently on a visit to Washington, said in a letter to Obama written today that he was pleased that the Nobel Committee had "recognised your approach towards resolving international conflicts through the wisdom and power of dialogue."
The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that Obama has "created a new climate in international politics" where "dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts."

In his letter, the Dalai Lama said, "The Committee has rightly noted your efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons and your constructive role in environmental protection. Noting that the 20th century was a century of bloodshed, he said, "All of us have the responsibility to make the 21st century a century of dialogue and co-operation. There is thus the need for concerted efforts from all sides in this highly interdependent world to promote and adopt a more compassionate approach."

ผลสำรวจเรื่องช่องว่างและความแตกต่างระหว่างหญิงและชายประจำปี 2552 จากการประชุมเวทีเศรษฐกิจโลก (ดับเบิลยูอีเอฟ) ระบุว่า 4 ประเทศนอร์ดิกอย่าง ไอซ์แลนด์ ฟินแลนด์ นอร์เวย์ และสวีเดน ขึ้นแท่นประเทศที่มีช่องว่างของหญิงและชายน้อยที่สุดในโลก ติดต่อกัน 4 ปีแล้ว โดยมีระดับความเท่าเทียมอยู่ที่ 83.8%
ทั้งนี้ สำหรับไทยรั้งอยู่ในอันดับที่ 59 จาก 134 ประเทศ ซึ่งถึงจะอยู่ในอันดับต้นๆ ของภูมิภาค แต่ก็แย่ลงกว่าปีที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งเคยอยู่อันดับที่ 52 ในขณะที่จีนตามมาเป็นอันดับที่ 60 และประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอย่างเวียดนามก็อยู่ในอันดับที่ 72 สิงคโปร์ครองอันดับที่ 85

นอกจากนี้ เคลาส์ ชแวบ ประธานของดับเบิลยูอีเอฟ กล่าวว่า เด็กผู้หญิงและสตรีมีกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งของประชากรโลก ถ้าไม่มีแรงการสนับสนุนและอำนาจให้คนเหล่านี้ เศรษฐกิจโลกคงไม่สามารถฟื้นตัวได้รวดเร็วนัก

ด้านประเทศที่รั้งอยู่ท้ายกระดานในการจัดอันดับในครั้งนี้ อาทิ ซาอุดี…อาระเบีย เบนิน ปากีสถาน ชาด และเยเมน ซึ่งมีคะแนนความเท่าเทียมเพียง 46.1%

Presidential Proclamation: Leif Erikson Day Oct. 9, 2009

On this day in 1825, the ship Restauration landed in New York City after sailing for 3 months from Stavanger, Norway. The 52 passengers aboard represented the first organized emigration of Norwegians to America. These brave individuals set to the seas, following in the grand footsteps of the famous Scandinavian explorer Leif Erikson. Over a millennium ago, Leif Erikson — son of Iceland and grandson of Norway — arrived in North America and founded the settlement Vinland, located in modern-day Canada. Today, we celebrate his historic voyage and remember those who journeyed to America from far-away lands.

Our Nation’s founding history is marked by millions of individuals who faced great hardship and difficulty as they pursued a brighter future abroad. As explorers, they did not know what they would find, but they were determined not to turn back, in order to learn what lay beyond the setting sun. This same spirit lived within Leif Erikson, and it has inspired countless others who venture from their homes in search of opportunity, uncertain of the possibilities and challenges that await them.

Today, our Nation continues to welcome those descendents of Leif Erickson to our shores. Nordic Americans have contributed immeasurably to the success of America. Their cultural accomplishments have enriched the diversity of our country. And their pioneering spirit continues to embody our Nation’s unbounded enthusiasm for discovery and learning.

To honor Leif Erikson and celebrate our Nordic-American heritage, the Congress, by joint resolution (Public Law 88-566) approved on September 2, 1964, has authorized the President to proclaim October 9 of each year as “Leif Erikson Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2009, as Leif Erikson Day, and I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs to honor our country’s rich Nordic-American heritage.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.
